POSITION DESCRIPTION

Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) seeks to modernize its operational data store Operational Data Store (ODS). The existing ODS is an on-premise database and we are planning to move to a cloud-based solution. This position for a Senior Cloud Architect will be focused on creating a roadmap to be used for implementing this modernization.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is embarking on an initiative to modernize its Operational Data Store (ODS) by transitioning from its current fully on-premises database solution to a hybrid or full cloud-based solution. To support this critical effort, we are seeking a highly skilled Cloud Data Architect Consultant to develop a comprehensive roadmap for this modernization project. This role will play a pivotal part in defining the strategy, architecture, and implementation framework necessary to enable a seamless and effective migration to the cloud.

Responsibilities:
• Analyze the existing on-prem ODS architecture, data models, access controls, and integration processes to understand dependencies and potential migration challenges.
• Assess various cloud service providers and platforms to identify the best fit for LANL’s operational and technical requirements.
• Design a scalable, secure, and efficient architecture for the cloud-based ODS, incorporating best industry’s practices for data storage, integration, and access.
• Identify and implement measures to maintain data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance throughout the migration and in the new cloud environment.
• Develop a plan for the migration of data from the current database to the cloud, ensuring data integrity and minimal downtime.
• Recommend strategies for optimizing the performance and scalability of the new cloud-based ODS to meet current and future needs.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
No degree required. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to obtain a Q if needed. 
  •  Seasoned Senior Data Architect with 15+ years of experience in data architecture, data modernization, cloud-based data solutions, and data management.
  • Expertise in designing scalable, efficient data architectures and operational data stores (ODS), both on-premises and cloud-based solutions.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud platforms and their respective database services, storage solutions, and architecture best practices regardless of the cloud provider.
  • Proven ability to design and execute complex data migration strategies, ensuring data integrity, security, and minimal downtime.
  • Expertise in system performance tuning and database optimization, ensuring scalability and efficiency in high-transactional environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with technical teams, stakeholders, and leadership.
  • Technical Proficiency in Key database technologies – AWS, Azure, Oracle Exadata, Oracle SQL, SQL.
  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment,
  • Satisfactory results of a pre-employment screening, which includes a background check and drug screening,
  • Ability to fulfill and promote L&A core values.

  • Previous experience on DOE sites and programs,
  • Data Warehouse/Data Lake
  • Oracle XBETA
  • Integrations (Boomi-highly preferred)
