The Project Engineer 3 supervises the engineering activity (all disciplines) on a project, or designated portions of a project, for a global business unit. The main duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans and directs engineering assignments on the project,
  • Demonstrates technical responsibilities for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating these assignments,
  • Understands the standard engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating, and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the application of engineering techniques,
  • Establishes or assists in establishing the detailed project execution plan and the development of the overall project engineering budget and schedule,
  • Performs and manages the work in accordance with relevant LANL standards,
  • Directs engineering activities in preparation of project proposals, including estimates for engineering staffing, quantities, scope reviews, schedules and other functional groups,
  • Originates, reviews, and/or approves design documents, change orders, material requisitions and specifications for construction or procurement use,
  • Supervises the preparation of, reviews and endorses bid analyses and recommendations for procurement of equipment material and services within Engineering's scope of responsibility,
  • Resolves field initiated questions on engineering,
  • Coordinates activities among the design groups on the project,
  • Reviews project engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required,
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of project studies, reports, forecasts, special engineering reports and plant data book,
  • Ensures that Technical Risk Assessments are comprehensive and complete, safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding design documentation are in compliance with project Quality Assurance plan and procedures,
  • Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to client, project and functional management as directed and as appropriate.
  • Independently develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors,
  • Accomplish work without considerable direction,
  • Coordinate activities of other personnel,
  • Exercise significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determine the methods and procedures needed for new assignments,
  • Champions the creation of a project work environment, supported by leadership on the project/program, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.


  • Position typically requires a degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university,
  • Specialized courses in relevant general engineering, architectural design or an appropriate engineering discipline, and progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in project design engineering; may include other relevant types of engineering including startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or engineering/construction firms,
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience would be considered.



  • Ability to obtain and hold a Q-Level DOE security clearance,
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience,
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience as a Project Engineer,
  • Understanding of and experience working with EVMS compliant schedule and cost control systems,
  • Advanced knowledge of project engineering processes and procedures consistent with the duties described above,
  • Proven experience and thorough knowledge of project execution processes and procedures, detailed engineering, and construction work processes,
  • Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved and current knowledge of new methods of design and construction,
  • Working knowledge of related non-reactor nuclear codes, standards, best practice non-nuclear nuclear/hazardous mechanical confinement systems,
  • Demonstrated skill in supervision/mentoring,
  • A seasoned professional with wide-ranging experience,
  • Uses industry concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways,
  • Frequently contributes to the development of new theories and methods,
  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment,
  • Pass a pre-placement physical examination, which includes drug screening, and inclusion in random drug testing program,
  • Ability to fulfill and promote L&A core values.


  • Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards and LANL Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures,
  • PMP certification,
  • Professional Engineering license.​​​​​​


Los Alamos, NM
This position requires 95%+ on-site work (minimal telework) and is contingent on ability to gain site access to Los Alamos National Laboratory. LANL is a multidisciplinary research institution dedicated to enhancing national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
